God’s sovereignty and man’s free will….can the two really coexist?

In the Bible it is said that God is sovereign. If you look up the word in various dictionaries, you would find it described with words such as “supreme,” “independent,” “paramount,” and “power.” However, if it is the case that God is supreme and that He knows and control all things

“God knows all things past, present, and future. There is no limit to His knowledge, for God knows everything completely before it even happens” (Romans 11:33).

How then does man really have free will -the ability to choose? Can we really say we have free will if regardless of our decision God’s will is the one that will prevail?

“Many plans occupy the mind of a man, but the LORD’s purposes will prevail” (Prov 19:21).

    1. I believe that both can co-exist. I think it’s God’s sovereignty that birthed the free will of man. I say this because, if by sovereignty God is independent(has a free will) then man is also independent (also has free will). This is from biblical reference to the fact that man was made in God’s image(Genesis 1:26).

Am I equating God to man by claiming that man is also sovereign? Well my response would be yes and no. Yes because in Genesis 1:26 God gave man the mandate to have dominion (sovereignty). No because in the same verse God defined and limited the domain of man’s sovereignty to everything He had created(the fish, sea, animals, sky e.t.c.).

Within this domain, God created choices (do good or evil, obey or disobey, e.t.c), more like decision bowls(free will). By constraining man to choose from this decision bowls, God retains His ultimate sovereignty and man is equally able to cleave to his free will.
